Roofing accessories: their types and applications

Flux range

Flux is essential to prepare your work surface. To obtain a solder that adheres perfectly, you must strip the zinc (or copper) with this specific product to get a clean condition. You can choose between several types of flux:

• flux 847 for new and natural zinc;
• flux 855 Full organic flux or Decap Green: Also for natural zinc, it is composed of raw materials that do not emit carbon dioxide or other toxic fumes and thus improves the working conditions of the welder;
• flux 845: more powerful, it is used for already oxidized zinc, which has been in place for several years;
• oxidised, pre-weatherd zinc 850 flux, intended for zinc coatings (quartz, anthra, etc.): it allows you to strip paint or any other coating from pre-weathered zinc to recover its natural appearance; you can then complete it with 847 or 855;
• Copper flux: with copper being more difficult to strip, this flux is more powerful than the others.

The flux is applied with a brush or with Guilbert’s new Flux Applicator Pen. You fill its tank with the flux of your choice and control the flow by turning the brush. This is available as a spare part.

Baseplates

The new 845 baseplate is designed to avoid flux reversal on zinc. It is mounted on a stand for better balance. There is a space on the baseplate for ammonia salt (ammonia stone) to clean the torch tip. You easily insert the tinning paste into the holder.

Stone igniter

More practical than the lighter, the stone lighter is ideal for igniting the roofer’s soldering iron. It has a long enough handle that you just have to press it to make the flame come out. Even if your equipment has a piezo ignition, always carry a stone igniter and… stones! The lighter also comes with 5 spare stones. Once used, you can find them on the brand’s website, or at your usual retailer.

Quick connect coupling

Guilbert Express offers a quick connect coupling device, with its hose and connectors. It allows you to unclip the iron and switch from the soldering iron to the gun. The swivel coupling also prevents damage to the hose.

The Raptor Handle, the Vulcan Handle and the Piezo’s

The Raptor handle is intended for waterproofers and the Vulcane handle for people working in sanitary heating. The quick-release coupling clips onto the torch handle. On these models, the piezo can be changed easily, without the need for tools.

Regulators

Guilbert offers numerous regulators to the standard of roofing irons, i.e. 2 bars for propane gas. If you work in both waterproofing and roofing, the 686 regulator is equipped with a thumbwheel which allows the pressure to be increased up to 4 bar. This allows you to switch from one activity to another without having to change your regulator. It includes a safety valve (part number 18092) that cuts off the gas in case of a leak. The Twiny fitting is versatile. It clips directly onto the bottles and allows the regulator to be screwed on.

Roofer’s iron grid

For its roofing irons, Guilbert offers a grid as a spare part that allows the flame and heat to be evenly distributed throughout the head.

Transfer connection

The transfer connection allows you to refill a small bottle from a large 13 kg gas bottle.

Flame arrester

The flame arrester is a thermal protection that allows plumbers to perfectly protect the wall in front of which they are working. They’re now free of toxic fibers.
